CHRISTMAS SHOW 2010

WHAT A PERFORMANCE!

Well, what a bunch this lot are! Mr Smith has nominated this lot for their hard work and commitment to the School Christmas Concert. Not only are they practicing their singing in the choir, many of them are also putting together their own dance performances too. This entails spending a lot of their spare time choreography the moves and practicing, practicing and then more practicing. Mr Ojelade has auditioned all the acts to make sure they were good enough and then helped with professional tips (Remember: he organizes the Spanish National Hip Hop Dance Championships in Valencia each year!). Others have written their own songs and Mr Smith has written the music and produced a professional backing track for each group. Organising this show is not something that just ‘happens’. Mr Smith has been working without a break for months to make it perfect. He uses all his spare time to rehearse with the groups and then goes home to write and record all the backing tracks for each group of singers. Without Mr Smith the Christmas Shows and your chance to perform would not exist. Make sure you thank him for all the things he is doing for you!

This really is promising to be a great show. You can see it too at the Caixa Rural Theatre in Vila Real on 20th December.

(I have also offered some dance tips to each act. I was the 1974 North West Regional Jive Champion so I can’t think why they’ve not used any of my cool moves……)

A WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN’ GOIN’ ON!

No, we aren’t starting a new policy of working on the floor instead of on tables. Nor are we making the students clean the floor before each lesson. No, this is the English Department’s annual Shakespeare research programme for Year 8. The students were asked to find out as much as possible about William Shakespeare and the times he lived in. From that period of history they investigated the education system, the kings and queens, fashions, theatres, the way people lived and the Black Death. They looked at how all these things may have affected the way Shakespeare wrote his plays and the subjects he chose to write about. The results of their research were included on a huge poster that each class produced together. You can see the results which have been stuck to the windows of the dining room. All the staff from the English Department have commented on the excellent behaviour and enthusiasm of all the students. Well done, Year 8!

We hope that Adrian will soon get Marina’s head removed from his shoulder

SPANISH DEPARTMENT SUPERSTARS

What has Maria got to smile about? Well, Maria and Alejandra have been nominated by the whole Secondary Spanish Department because they have got some of the highest grades in all of the three subjects: Lengua, Valencía and Cono.

Mr Fran said that all of their teachers were impressed by their level of effort and their desire to achieve as highly as possible. Well done, Maria and Alejandra, and all the other students who work to the best of their ability.

MATHS SHOOTING STARS

Well, just look at this happy couple. Why are these two on the Superstars board? As always excellent performance in Maths classes always gets a mention on the board (I wonder why….) and Naza and Melanie are performing really well at the moment. In their last Maths test they scored the best marks in my class but also beat lots of people in the other two Maths classes. I have really been pleased with their positive attitude to the subject and this is the main thing that has helped them improve their levels.

Remember: if you want improve in any subject, stay positive, enjoy your lessons and always do that bit more than everybody else. Well done, Naza and Melanie, and all those other students who are trying their best!

Mr Cross

JUST HORSING AROUND!

At last I got Diana to smile (even if it is just a cool and cautious one). But why is Diana on the Superstars board? Well, during one of my Maths lessons we did a probability horse race using dice. The students were asked to quickly draw a picture of a horse and most of them drew something that resembled a potato with four sticks poking out of it.

BONJOUR!

Once again Foreign Languages in our school go from strength to strength. Mr Drake has nominated this group of Year 8 francophiles because of their positive attitude towards the subject, their participation in class and their general ‘fab-ness’. As teachers, we love teaching students in this school (most of the time) because of your enthusiasm and perseverance to always do the best you can. Well done to Raquel, Maria, Elena, Nacho and Christina. If you show these Superstar qualities, expect to see your picture up here pretty soon.

A WINNING TEAM!

This week’s nomination from the PE Department goes to the Year 7 Football team. During their first match this week they beat the opposition 8 – 1. Mr Ojelade said:

“It was a great start to the season with an excellent team performance. Everyone contributed and supported each other in a well played match. There was a good atmosphere and everyone behaved superbly. Congratulations to Gonzalo on his appointment as team captain.”

Once again the Year 7 have shown why the sporting tradition in our school is so strong. Well done to Pablo, Gonzalo, Nacho, Alejandra, Clara, Aaron, Javier, Marta, Cesar, Maria, and Fernando!

(But now tell me this: what exactly has Maria Gil seen off to her left……..?)

MATHEMATICAL STAR IN THE MAKING ...

Alex Broch, a mathematical star in the making. What is an arithmetic progression? How do we sum the first N terms of an arithmetic progression?  These are just two of the tricky problems that Alex and his fellow year 12 mathematics pupils have been considering.

One further small point, Alex scored 100 percent in his recent mathematics exam.

MOST IMPROVED STUDENT IN BUSINESS STUDIES

Omar Assim is this terms most improved student. His attitude and commitment to Business Studies have delivered a marked improvement, both results wise and throughout in class participation. His attitude has been inspiring and as such he is an example to his peers. I hope it continues Omar.

Congratulations!
Mr O´Callaghan

YEAR 11 DANCE

Year 11 have been hard at work perfecting their dance moves ! Click on the link above to have a look

NATURAL TALENT!!

Year 11 Art Students have made excellent progress with their shaded sketches of Natural Forms. Students are studying the characteristics of the Art Nouveau movement, where artists took their inspirations from organic forms, such as vines, flowers, leaves and fruit. These drawings will provide an important starting point for a painting on canvas. This class will also combine material from studies they have made at the Estacion del Norte, and El Mercado Central, where sketches of tiles were drawn displaying organic forms, such as oranges and vines.

Well Done to the following students who have all progressed their observational Drawing Skills, by showing an understanding of shape, line, texture and a clear contrast of tone!
Patricia Agramunt, Iria Barbosa, Dimitris Georgantzis, Laura Llach, Cristina Traver, Cathy Matthews, Ana Dols, Jorge Forner, Elisa Lafuente, Sara Larrea, Elisa Madronero, Alma Nebot and Neify Penafiel.

Sarah Eldridge (Art Department)

Hoy, los alumnos de year 11 han jugado un apasionante partido contra sus profesores. Pero los alumnos han demostrado su superioridad, ganando a los profesores con un resultado de 9 – 5

¡ Buena suerte la próxima vez profesorado!

X - FACTOR PROJECT...

Year 10 have become part of the music business, they have been hard at work forming a new band to enter into the X-factor talent contest.  There were lots of tasks involved in becoming the best band manager in the world.  Click on the videos below to have a look.

MY  LAST DUCHESS

Sonia has been inspired by the dramatic monologue My Last Duchess by Robert Browning. This is a poem that year 11 study for their IGCSE Literature course. The Duke Ferrara is addressing an envoy and bragging about his power and the fact that his "last Duchess" mysteriously disappeared...
Sonia´s poem is written from the point of view of the envoy, who has to stand and listen to the Duke´s eloquent speech.

PORTRAITS ...

Ruben is investigating the theme "portraits". He's developing his practical artistic skills, working with a variety of materials like charcoal, oil pastels, acrylics and graphite pencils. Ruben is exploring working with different media, he made photographs, he experimented working on black card, and currently he's using his ICT skills by editing his photos with the Adobe Photoshop. These past few weeks Ruben has made very good progress. He made a couple of self-portraits, showing high contrast and mysterious sphere. He showed excellent understanding of working with Photoshop and discovered what impression a picture can have when he edits a photograph, changing background, colours and composition. Well done Ruben!
Miss Eldridge and Miss Roozenburg

TOP OF THE CLASS IN LENGUA

Miss Esther is very impressed with the recent efforts and attainment of Ana Dols. Ana is currently at the top of the class in Lengua  - we hope she stays there! Keep up the good work Ana!

110% EFFORT

MANOLO ANSUATEGUI – YEAR 11

“I would like to nominate my star of the week to Manolo. He always puts in 110% effort. In class during discussions and questioning he always makes positive, well- informed contributions. Well Done!”  Mrs Winfrow

A POETIC GENIUS….

Miss Cooper is delighted with the creativity of Sonia Espejo, who recently wrote a poem based on the character of Catherine from the IGCSE Literature text “A View From The Bridge.” Sonia has shown maturity, emotion and a natural ability to write with empathy. Well Done!

GOOD START :)

Paula Fabregat in Year 10 has had a really good start to the year!!! She scored 97 % in the first PE GCSE test- this means she only made one mistake!!! Well done to Paula and we hope to see more good results! Mr Roozenburg

SCIENCE TRIP TO OCEANOGRAFIC - VALENCIA

Year 8A

MISS COOPER IS A VAMPIRE !

Miss Cooper has nominated Nacho, Ferran and Maria as her superstars this month. They have shown maturity and determination in every lesson and they are really enjoying the Year 8 novel Room 13, which is all about vampires! Miss Cooper would also like to take this chance to say well done to all her Year 8 students - it has been an impressive start to the year.

SURREAL BODY ART

Our Artistic Super Stars this week have been nominated by Miss Roozenburg for the work they have been doing regarding Surrealism.

She said:

“We looked at Surrealism and discussed one particular work, ‘The Persistence of Memory’, made by the famous Spanish artist Salvador Dali. The picture shows a creature lying on the floor, made up off combined parts of the human face; eyelashes, nose, tongue, mouth. This inspired us to make our own surrealistic landscape, created with body parts but combined in a way that the outcome is surreal. All students made several sketches and worked out their best one on A3 with soft pastels. The results of this project for whole Year 9 were very good, but these girls did a particularly great job!”

It is really pleasing to see our Year 9 students looking forward and preparing for their IGCSE courses next year.

RAUL RULES!

The Sporting Super Star of the week is Raul Safont. In a recent Badminton Assessment Raul gained the highest score in his class. Mr Roozenburg nominated Raul because:

“He has a perfect combinbation of good positioning, a relaxed confident style and an ability to win lots of points!”

If you want to challenge the current champion of 8A to a game of badminton you can go along to the Badminton Club run by Mr Tasker at 2.10pm on Thursday lunchtime. If you feel really confident you can even challenge Mr Tasker to a game! Luis Lacasa and Vicent Abaso came close to beating him last week but Mr Tasker just managed to beat them in the end. Well done to all the students that are taking advantage of the sports activities that the PE department offer you during their free time.

DONT´T IGNORE IGOR

Mr Fran decided to nominate Igor Lukin as one of our Super Stars this week because of his exceptional progress in Valenciano. Igor joined the school in Year 7 after he moved to the area from his native Russia. Mr Fran (still the one on the right) says that Igor is making more progress and speaks better Valenciano than student that have lived in our Comunidad all their lives. This is an amazing achievement and just goes to show what you can achieve if you really try. Igor now speaks five languages! Well done, Igor!

CLASS OF THE WEEK

No, Miss Navarro has not been attacked by this grim crowd on the stairs. They are actually our ‘Class of the Week’. They produced some amazing work this week writing weather reports and then presenting the weather forecast in German. Miss Navarro was impressed by their level of effort and motivation during this topic. They spent a lot of time producing accurate maps and precise weather charts and made them look very professional. Sehr Gut!

Thank you, Carlos, for showing us your sore thumb. We hope it gets better soon.

LEARNING TO DROWN WITH A SMILE :)

Our lastest Super Stars have been nominated by

Mr Ojelade who had this to say about them:

“These two talented swimmers should be very proud after recording the fastest times of their class swimming front crawl. Four lengths of the smaller pool (Marina in 37.96 seconds and Glauka in 32.65 seconds!) The challenge will be there for other Year 8 students to reach a similar standard when swimming comes around again in the summer term. Congratulations!”

It’s this sort of perseverance and dedication that we like to see on the Super Stars board. Take care if you want to beat them, though. If you look carefully you can see that the girls swam so fast that their bodies turned to jelly. You have been warned.

SETTING AN EXAMPLE TO OTHERS

Thank you to Carlos Ramirez, Year 10, for setting the example in ICT!

He has shown interest and enthusiasm and he has produced some very good, original work in Photoshop, which is very difficult to master.

Well Done Carlos! You´re really famous ?!?!
Mrs Winfrow

UEFA and BSV

The school was very fortunate to be asked to participate in the recording of a coaching video organized by U.E.F.A and ADIDAS.  The coaching video is aimed at helping coaches across the world.  A group of BSV pupils from years seven, eight and nine accompanied by PE staff were involved in two full mornings of coaching.  The sessions were taken by a professional coach, who is currently working with English premiership clubs such as Manchester City, West Ham and Blackburn Rovers.  ADIDAS were very generous in providing the participants with full kit that they were able to keep and also the school was given footballs and other equipment.  The organizers of the event commended our pupils on both their behaviour and ability.  It proved to be a very valuable and enjoyable experience for all those involved.

YEAR 10´S GEOGRAPHY FIELD TRIP
The year 10 IGCSE Geography class went to the Navajas River to investigate its features. They spent the day using and learning fieldwork skills vital for the course. They measured the stream velocity using an orange, a stopwatch and a tape measure by timing the orange over a 10 metre distance. Next they measured channel width and depth creating a cross-section of the river bed with the results. Using a clinometer and ranging poles they measured the river bed gradient. Finally they recorded size of bedload and bedload characteristics at different points in the upper course of the river. When they finished doing the investigations they went to eat a picnic near the waterfall called ‘Salto de la Novia’, during lunch they shared photographs of the features, compared their results with others in the classand completed written activities related to the fieldwork.

In the afternoon they visited the Navajas Dam, they went on a tour through it and visited its surroundings; making notes. Finally they discussed their results and what they saw and learnt during the day, they then returned by bus to school. In subsequent lessons they compared their own results to the hypothesis.

Year 10 enjoyed their recent trip to Navajas.

Yasmina said  “We went to Navajas on a Geography trip, which was really enjoyable. We measured the velocity of the river by carrying out races using oranges! We also measured the depth of the river, we all got very wet when we did this . We saw the erosion of the rocks and some of us swam in the river, I didn’t because the water was too cold. We all really enjoyed the trip”

VERAS VIDEO

Recently Year 7 visited the Oceano Grafico in Valencia where Vera Gonzalez in Year 7A made this brilliant video.  Please click on the link below to watch it. :)

YEAR 7 – YEAR GROUP OF THE MONTH

When I asked the teachers to give me the names of some Year 7 students for my Super Stars board they all looked a little baffled. When I asked them what the problem was, they said how could they choose just one or two people when the whole Year group is so good? As a result all the staff have nominated Year 7 as their Year Group of the Month.

All of Year 7 have made an excellent start to Secondary School. They have shown a mature approach to their studies and are continuing to make good progress. They are helping each other by looking after the people in their forms and if there are any problems they are telling a teacher who sorts it out for them.

Miss Winfrow, Mr Matthews, Mr Cope and Mr Javier are all really pleased with their forms. Well done, Year 7!

YEAR 8 - GIRLS ON TOP FORM

This week our nominated stars from the PE Department are the Year 8 Football team.
Mr Ojelade said:  “Congratulations to the Year 8 football team who showed excellent character in their first match of the Villareal tournament. After going behind 3-1 they refused to give up and fought back to earn a 3-3 draw. Well done to the whole team” Again the girls show what an excellent sporting tradition we have in our school. Well done!

(I couldn’t decide which photo to use so I put them both in! Which do you prefer? Shame we couldn’t find any T shirts with sleeves for the girls on the left. )

HEAD BOY AND HEAD GIRL

Congratulations to our year 13 students who have succeeded in being chosen for these responsible positions! Nico Traver and Cristina Rubiols have become representatives of all the secondary students. They will be expected to speak at some important events and they will also symbolise the student body at any event which includes contact with members of the public and parents. Well done to both students and good luck in your new roles!
